Why you may need a technology consultant

by | Accounting or Payroll, Construction

Contractors of all trades have relied on trusted consultants for insurance (brokers) and accounting (bookkeepers) since insurance and accounting were required. Today, there is a third segment of expertise that requires help too. This is the technology segment.

It can be an overwhelming task to set up new systems and computers or even new web based apps. If this is not your area of expertise, consider bringing in a technology consultant to help analyse options and help implement solutions.

As a principle at a 50+ person construction company who was in charge of this task for many years, I can say first hand that it is worth the money to invest in good consultants. They can save you so much time and frustration if this is not your strength.

What is a Technology Consultant?

A Technology Consultant (aka IT consultant) advises organizations on how best to use technology to achieve their business  objectives. Specifically for construction companies, tech consultants will setup accounting systems, computers, networks, network security, backup, file systems, email systems and construction software systems such as BuildCenter.

How to find a good consultant?

Just like your insurance broker and bookkeeper, finding an IT consultant is no easy task. It requires total trust in the person to make good recommendations and set things up for success.

Getting recommendations from a business peer or advisor is a good place to start. Ask other contractors that you know if they have any suggestions.

If your business is in Northern California, I can recommend a firm called Tech Knowledge Group. This group is experienced in helping construction companies decide on and implement new systems.

If your business is in another area, consider a firm that knows construction and is familiar with the systems and technology used by contractors.

Summary

As construction technology continues to evolve, the contractors that are embracing it and leveraging it to streamline their business processes are thriving and separating themselves from the pack. Even for small and medium contractors, using tools like BuildCenter to “control the chaos” is key to thriving as a business. Picking the right technology partner to help you can make this transition easy and seamless.
